San Jose is home to several excellent, often underappreciated film festivals, and this weekend is your chance to experience one of the newest arrivals. The 2nd annual J-Town Film Fest takes place at JTS Northside Community Center and the Japanese American Museum in Japantown from Friday through Sunday. Highlights include Saturday evening's Filmfest Reception, and—because dogs love to chase the ball—we particularly recommend the outstanding ping pong documentary Top Spin on Saturday at 11am. See the full schedule of movies & events and grab your early tickets here.

Hey, does your pit bull love poetry? Does your spaniel dig spoken word? Check out tomorrow night's ImagineSJ Showcase #8 at the Anno Domini Gallery in Downtown San Jose. Moderated by Mighty Mike McGee (which would be a great name for a Scottish terrier) and hosted by Future Arts Now, the event features Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Arlene Biala as well as poets Asha Sudra Finkel, Eric Rummelhoff, and Tshaka Campbell. You'll be so inspired that you'll want to write and ode to your Odie.
The SoFA Street Fair is a free weekend afternoon block party on South First Street in Downtown San Jose, and it's coming up this Sunday, April 24, from 2-9pm. For the past two years, it has happened in September, but this year they're adding a "Spring Edition." And while the weather is slated to cool off this weekend, that doesn't mean it's not a great reason to bring your dog out for a walk, have a beer, listen to some great live music, and do a little shopping at the artsy booths along the street. The usual food trucks will be there, and probably some body painted models, because that's what San Jose street festivals have.
The SoFA Street Fair Facebook page has been sharing the lineups for the various stages (three outdoor & 11 indoor performance venues). RSVP to the event and invite all your pals. And if you see someone who wants to take pictures of your pup, oblige them! Get your dog immortalized with a portrait at Warby Parker stores, including the San Jose store at Santana Row this Friday from 4-7pm.* The store also promises snacks for both humans and pups, so why would you not drop by?
*Glasses not required. Do you enjoy beer? If so, you definitely need to visit one of San Jose's best beer spots, Original Gravity Public House. And what better time to do it than during a beer event featuring a dog-themed brewery?
On Thursday, March 24, from 6pm-close, check out OG's Bike Dog Brewing event and try out their beers - including Dog Years, San Dog, and Three Dog Night. You can also meet brewery owner Sage Smith and give him a pat on the head for being a good boy. San Jose Bike Party doesn't announce its actual route until 24 hours before the event, but you can still plan to participate in this fun, community-driven event, which takes place this Friday, March 18, starting at 7:30pm.
Bike Party hosts a ride each month with a different theme—this month's is "The Pajama Ride," so wear your favorite onesie or puppy PJs and have a blast. Put your best friend in a bike carrier like these to maximize puppy participation! RSVP to Bike Party on Facebook here.
San Jose musician Cellista reconstructs the 1941 premiere performance of Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time at San Jose's Anno Domini art gallery, incorporating the artwork of Barron Storey in an interdisciplinary event.
Performances are on Saturday, March 12th, at 8pm and Sunday, March 13th, at 2pm. Tickets ($30) are available at artful.ly/theendoftime. |
